UNVEILING OF THE NEW PLAQUE ON THE WAR MEMORIAL

Saturday 6 October 2018, 11.00am
Bidford War Memorial

In 2014 Bob Marshall published a book on the Bidford soldiers killed in the Great War and named on the village War Memorial. But what of those who fought and survived? In the course of researching their stories, Bob discovered a further five men who were killed. It is therefore fitting that, one hundred years after the end of World War I, their sacrifice is finally recognised by the village they called home.

Bidford Parish Council, with help from Bidford and District History Society, has had a new plaque made for the War Memorial, complete with the five extra names, to be unveiled on Saturday 6th October.

All are welcome as, a century after their deaths, we pay tribute in a short ceremony, to five Bidford soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

For centuries glass has been manufactured in the Stourbridge area, reputedly started in the 17th century by French glassmakers from the Lorraine region. Stourbridge Glass is recognised as amongst the finest in the world and has been used countless times as gifts for royalty and visiting dignitaries to the UK.

Please come along to hear from Ian Drury all about glass making. This will be on Ian’s last talks as he is retiring.

Charlie followed the British Army to Camp Bastion in Afghanistan in 2013 and at 28, became the UKs youngest female war artist. Charlie is a British artist based in Bidford on Avon. Her work looks at history and its repetitive nature; the value of our heritage and our similarities to previous generations and to each other. Charlie has had many notable exhibitions and commissions both in London and abroad. Previous projects include her selection as an Official War Artist with the British Army in Afghanistan 2013/14. Her installations have included large scale aluminium pieces, armoured metal, wood panel and vellum paper, combining photography, painting and drawing.

Will be a fascinating evening – I meet Charlie out walking my dog on the Big Meadow and am always shocked at what interesting people we have living in the village.

To the Fringe and Beyond – A talk by Ginny Davis.

When you get that kick in your throat, stomach, brain - it doesn't matter where - that tells you to accept a challenge, who knows where it will lead? Former translator and barrister, now writer and performer followed it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival when she was old enough to know better than to try something new. This talk illustrated by scenes from her 5* comedic plays about modern family life and punctuated with a short history of barristers' wigs and gowns charts the adventures which began with poor careers advice and have led to performing live theatre in Edinburgh and beyond. It concludes with a rendition of the fastest song on two legs and a simple message: “Don’t hold back. Don’t be scared. Fulfilment is a blessing. Grab it!”

All welcome. If you would like more details please contact Shirley on 01789 773366.
