The Big Meadow

The Big Meadow at Bidford-on-Avon

The Big Meadow (B50 4PQ) - Bidford-on-Avon's Riverside Attraction

The picturesque village of Bidford-on-Avon is situated on the River Avon approximately 6 miles west of Stratford-upon-Avon. The settlement of Bidford-on-Avon existed back in Roman times, and Roman artefacts have been found in the area. It was also a well known Saxon village and it was during this time that Bidford Bridge was built by monks some 600 years ago.

The village's main attraction is the 26 acre riverside meadow known as The Big Meadow, to the south of the River Avon, which has been a tourist centre for many years, when Birmingham residents would come and spend the day enjoying the delights of the river. And this attraction continues today, since every year, from 1 April to 30 September, the gates are open allowing visitors to drive in, park their cars for a reasonable fee of £3.00 per day, and enjoy a whole day by the river.

Families can stroll along the river, or walk to the lovely hamlet of Marlcliff and back; have a picnic on one of the many tables provided by the river; and children, of all ages, can enjoy the extensive, and well equipped, play area, which includes:

Pre-opening plans of the extensive play area.
  • Skate ramp
  • MUGA
  • Netscape
  • Outdoor Table Tennis Tables

The Big Meadow is also available to hire for Events in the Summer Months at very reasonable rates – and is free of charge for charity events: full details are available on the right.

The Big Meadow hosts a variety of large events during the year.

Every May sees the Annual Vintage Gathering, a very popular event which brings a number of exhibitors from the area: proudly displaying steam engines, vintage cars and motorbikes, etc. The event is managed by one of the local residents, Mark Smith, who donates 50% of the profit to a local charity.

We also hold the Annual Duck Race, which raises funds for the village Christmas Lights.

The Big Meadow is also a popular venue for the circus, which comes every year in early summer.

Bidford-on-Avon is a popular mooring point for canal boats heading for Stratford-upon-Avon and you can also hire boats in the village.

Visitors to the Big Meadow can easily access the High Street, with its conservation area and 13th century parish church, St. Laurence, by crossing the famous 600 year old bridge. Built way back in 1212, St. Laurence Church recently celebrated 800 years and is still used regularly.

Big Meadow Outdoor Gym

In May 2016, Bidford-on Avon Parish Council, with the support of a grant provided by Public Health Warwickshire, completed the installation of good quality Outdoor Gym Equipment at its popular large recreational area on the south bank of the River Avon known as The Big Meadow. The purpose of this equipment is to:

  • Encourage and increase the fitness of its local community, especially that of the older members who have difficulty accessing indoor gyms.
  • Create a safe and friendly environment in which to exercise with family and friends.
  • Improve the health and well being of local residents by providing free and accessible exercising equipment, in a beautiful outdoor setting.
