BIDFORD ON AVON WI - CANCELLED

Thursday 9 April 2020, 7.30 for 7.45pm
Bidford Methodist Church, Chapel Close, Bidford-on-Avon

Life of a Worcestershire Farmstead – Dr Alan Wadsworth

Farmsteads are very much part of the English landscape and this is particularly true in Worcestershire. Indeed, a project undertaken in 2010 to map the historic farms in the county showed that 81% of them still retained some part or all of their historic buildings. However, there are enormous pressures on farming and historic farm buildings are being lost. In many cases, they no longer meet the needs of modern agriculture and they are expensive to maintain. The result is that many are being converted to other sustainable uses or are simply falling down.

All welcome. If you would like more details please contact Shirley on 01789 773366.

Mad, Bad and Dangerous – Tim Barney

This talk is about military ideas and inventions that turned out to be crazy, or useless, or just downright dangerous – and sometimes all three! A light-hearted look at a sorry saga of incompetence, short-sightedness and wishful thinking, plus a sideways glance at some other inventions that were perfectly serviceable in themselves, but ended up being used in the wrong way, at the wrong time or in the wrong place.

The first female Percussionist to play in a UK professional Orchestra – Maggie Cotton

Maggie studied for one year at the Royal Academy of Music in London, not receiving a grant from her local authority as she was told that she was the wrong sex playing the wrong instruments: all those ‘boys’ toys’ at the back of an orchestra. Her interest in music began with piano at the age of 6 but eventually orchestral music became an all-consuming passion. Maggie was awarded the ARAM (Associate of the Royal Academy of Music) in May 2018 – the first female percussionist in be awarded this recognition.

Back to Backs Birmingham – Clive Katz

The Birmingham Back to Backs are the city's last surviving court of back-to-back houses. They are preserved as examples of the thousands of similar houses that were built around shared courtyards, for the rapidly increasing population of Britain's expanding industrial towns. They are a very particular sort of British terraced housing. This sort of housing was deemed unsatisfactory, and the passage of the Public Health Act 1875 meant that no more were built; instead byelaw terraced houses took their place. This court, at 50–54 Inge Street and 55–63 Hurst Street, is now operated as a historic house museum by the National Trust.

Cakes 4 Casualties - Kath Ryan

Cakes 4 Casualties started in 2009, albeit rather accidentally! The Cake Lady, known to others as Kath Ryan, was visiting her sister in Selly Oak Hospital. She decided to try and cheer her up by baking her some cakes. Kath’s sister shared the cakes with the injured soldiers at the smoking hut, the cheeky chappies said “Ask your sister to bring us some cakes on S4!” Kath found this amusing and went ahead with their wishes…She baked 12 dozen different flavored cakes and took them to the Hospital. The soldiers at the hospital were very keen to meet this mysterious cake baking lady, so Kath went down to the ward and was struck by their courage, humor and cheek! After 2 weeks Kath phoned up the hospital to see if the lads would like some more cake and the nurse said “Would they ever! All we have heard is ‘do you think she’ll come back!?’”.
