BIDFORD ON AVON WI

Thursday 12 December 2019, 7.30 for 7.45pm
Bidford Methodist Church, Chapel Close, Bidford-on-Avon

To the Fringe and Beyond – A talk by Ginny Davis.

When you get that kick in your throat, stomach, brain - it doesn't matter where - that tells you to accept a challenge, who knows where it will lead? Former translator and barrister, now writer and performer followed it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival when she was old enough to know better than to try something new. This talk illustrated by scenes from her 5* comedic plays about modern family life and punctuated with a short history of barristers' wigs and gowns charts the adventures which began with poor careers advice and have led to performing live theatre in Edinburgh and beyond. It concludes with a rendition of the fastest song on two legs and a simple message: “Don’t hold back. Don’t be scared. Fulfilment is a blessing. Grab it!”

All welcome. If you would like more details please contact Shirley on 01789 773366.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

Saturday 12 and Sunday 15 December 2019
St Laurence Church, Bidford.

St Laurence's Church will be holding its 21st annual Christmas Tree Festival. The enthusiasm and creativity generated continue to delight the huge numbers of visitors that come from across the Midlands. The Festival has become a central feature in our village’s Christmas events.

There are up to 40 decorated Christmas trees round the walls in the church, with a theme of choice. Most carry lights, and the effect is magical when the church lights are periodically switched off after dark and the whole place is illuminated by just the Christmas tree lights. The event is greatly looked forward to by many hundreds of people each December.

'A Gentleman would not like it': The History of Restraint in Mental Health
Speaker: Dr. Sarah Chaney, Royal College of Nursing and Queen Mary, University of London

Development of care in Asylums. Few people are aware that the 'non-restraint' movement in England and Wales meant that all restraining garments, straps or chains largely disappeared from public asylums for a half-century. By the early 1850s, all asylums in England and Wales were claiming to follow the non-restraint system.

Life of a Worcestershire Farmstead – Dr Alan Wadsworth

Farmsteads are very much part of the English landscape and this is particularly true in Worcestershire. Indeed, a project undertaken in 2010 to map the historic farms in the county showed that 81% of them still retained some part or all of their historic buildings. However, there are enormous pressures on farming and historic farm buildings are being lost. In many cases, they no longer meet the needs of modern agriculture and they are expensive to maintain. The result is that many are being converted to other sustainable uses or are simply falling down.

Back to Backs Birmingham – Clive Katz

The Birmingham Back to Backs are the city's last surviving court of back-to-back houses. They are preserved as examples of the thousands of similar houses that were built around shared courtyards, for the rapidly increasing population of Britain's expanding industrial towns. They are a very particular sort of British terraced housing. This sort of housing was deemed unsatisfactory, and the passage of the Public Health Act 1875 meant that no more were built; instead byelaw terraced houses took their place. This court, at 50–54 Inge Street and 55–63 Hurst Street, is now operated as a historic house museum by the National Trust.

Cakes 4 Casualties - Kath Ryan

Cakes 4 Casualties started in 2009, albeit rather accidentally! The Cake Lady, known to others as Kath Ryan, was visiting her sister in Selly Oak Hospital. She decided to try and cheer her up by baking her some cakes. Kath’s sister shared the cakes with the injured soldiers at the smoking hut, the cheeky chappies said “Ask your sister to bring us some cakes on S4!” Kath found this amusing and went ahead with their wishes…She baked 12 dozen different flavored cakes and took them to the Hospital. The soldiers at the hospital were very keen to meet this mysterious cake baking lady, so Kath went down to the ward and was struck by their courage, humor and cheek! After 2 weeks Kath phoned up the hospital to see if the lads would like some more cake and the nurse said “Would they ever! All we have heard is ‘do you think she’ll come back!?’”.
